What is Junior Achievement and why should YOU invest?
THE CASE FOR JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT
Our Mission - To inspire and educate young Canadians to experience free enterprise, understand business and economics and develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills.
Youth and Opportunity:
The Real Alberta Advantage
An international non-profit organization, Junior Achievement brings together business leaders, educators, parents and the community to help prepare youth for their future. Brought to Edmonton in 1964 by the Edmonton Jaycees, Junior Achievement has developed a full suite of business education programs spanning grades 3 – 12. These programs, facilitated by volunteer consultants (over 400 annually), provide youth with many of the tools and skills required to be self-sufficient.
The Alberta Advantage
A decade ago, a new vision took hold in this province. Our economy was kick-started by new entrepreneurial opportunities that reflected the values of a new and stronger Alberta. Alberta is now the place in Canada where people look for jobs and a future. Our province is now booming, not just because of those opportunities but because of what we did for ourselves. We became entrepreneurs and leaders. It is this leadership and entrepreneurial spirit, which makes Alberta strong.
This is the foundation for the Alberta advantage.
The future of the Alberta Advantage
The future entrepreneurs and leaders of Alberta are our children and to that end, Junior Achievement believes that quality education must be one of the top priorities of our society. We also believe that if we want to continue to be a vibrant global community, we need to have a workforce that can compete. To meet this demand we believe there is no better education partner to our school systems than Junior Achievement.
The Urgent Need
At the present time in this province, Alberta Education does not offer a sequential based curriculum for children to learn about entrepreneurship and leadership. These skills are not taught in school.
Additionally, the cost of education increases each year. For many families, sending their children to university or college is becoming increasingly difficult, if not impossible. It is foreseeable that in the years to come, a solid business education for some children may not come from attending university, but from their earlier experience with JA. Alberta needs to sustain a competitive advantage in the global community. This can only be accomplished through careful preparation of youth for the future.
This is where JA comes in. JA brings the Alberta Advantage to life… in the classroom
Addressing The Need
Junior Achievement believes there is no better way to educate young people than by using a practical application of knowledge in an academic setting. JA’s programs give students the opportunity to combine practical applications with the general principles they learn in the classroom.
JA also gives students a chance to explore the free enterprise system and enhance their personal economic literacy. Understanding these concepts is necessary for prospering in adult life. We at Junior Achievement believe that when children are allowed to experience the benefits of combining knowledge with hard work, the probability for personal hope and inspiration is greatly increased.
- Elementary Programs JA’s elementary school programs are the foundation of its entire curricula. Our two program themes, Our Community (grade 3) and Our Business World (grade 5) each have hands-on activities and work to change kids’ lives by helping them to understand basic business & economics concepts at an early age.
- Junior High Programs JA’s Junior High programs include the popular Economics of Staying in School (ESIS). The program explores the relationship between education and achieving success. Students explore aptitudes and attitudes necessary for various careers and the steps involved in applying and interviewing for jobs.
- High School Programs JA’s high school programs are economic and business curricula for students in grades 10-12 and include two student-led enterprise initiatives as well as one on-line program. We believe students who participate in JA programs have a greater comprehension of economic and business concepts and strengthen their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
Unique opportunities we offer…
*Exposure to business concepts and positive roles models (at all stages) *Experiment and practice (in a safe environment) *Understanding of business and career opportunities
We also believe that JA inspires youth to communicate, think and embrace lifelong learning. Our programs inspire Alberta’s youth to learn and then demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviors. Finally they become people who are self sufficient.
The range of JA's programs, special events and conferences lets you customize your support of the organization, ensuring your objectives are met.
The JA experience offers a wide range of dividends for the large corporation, small or medium-sized entreprise (SME) or individual consultant:
- A chance to educate students on career opportunities within your sector
- Positive exposure to students, families and schools within a community context
- Leadership training and development opportunities for staff
- A means of developing a corporate legacy for your community
- An opportunity to reinforce corporate goals
- Participation in a full media relations program attached to an important social issue
- Excellent networking and business development opportunities
