JA of Northern Alberta & NWT

Our Board of Directors

At the very heart of Junior Achievement are its volunteers. They come from all walks of life but they share a passionate dedication to the free enterprise message of hope and opportunity. Together with the 6,000 estimated members of local JA boards across North America, they set the direction for Junior Achievement. Members of the local Junior Achievement Board work together with other leading business people, educators and community representatives to further the aims of the organization.

As you see below, the Junior Achievement Board of Directors is a diverse group of high level executives representing over 20 industries including: retail, manufacturing, accounting, insurance, property development, law, government, education, executive search, engineering, banking/finance, technology, environmental consulting, media, construction, heavy equipment, printing and oil & gas. Each Director below was chosen to join the JA Board because he or she stands for high quality education, integrity, professionalism, leadership and a shared vision that the future of the Alberta Advantage rests in the hearts and minds of today’s youth. These community leaders volunteer to serve the interests of Junior Achievement by making business education a priority in today’s classrooms. They are the lifeblood of the organization.

Director Qualifications

The primary role of the Board of Directors is to hire, evaluate and determine compensation for the President. The Board of Directors also has the responsibility for setting and monitoring the strategic direction of the organization. Currently, the operational role of the JA Board is to generate the dollars, volunteers for program delivery and community awareness as needed to meet our annual student reach targets.

Board members are called upon to contribute their management skills in such areas as policymaking, planning, financing, budgeting, marketing and administration. Their creative skills are needed in the areas of publicity and public relations as well as resource generation. Board members are elected, for a three year term. They may serve successive terms upon nomination and re-election by the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors believes that individuals who are nominated by the Board to be a director should have demonstrated notable or significant achievements in business, education or public service; should possess the requisite intelligence, education and experience to make a significant contribution to the Board and bring a range of skills, diverse perspectives and backgrounds to its deliberations; and should have the highest ethical standards, a strong sense of professionalism and intense dedication to serving the interests of Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta/NWT.

The following attributes or qualifications will be considered by The Board Development Committee in evaluating a person's candidacy for membership on the Board:

Integrity and Professionalism - The following are very essential characteristics for each Board candidate: highest standards of moral and ethical character and personal integrity; independence, objectivity and an intense personal commitment to Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta/NWT mission, principles and values.

Management and Leadership Experience - Relevant experience should include, at a minimum, a past or current leadership role in a specific industry and business or recognized as having a past or current leadership role in the educational sector or a past or current senior managerial or advisory position with a highly visible nonprofit organization.

Skilled and Diverse Background - All candidates must possess the aptitude or experience to understand fully the legal responsibilities of a director and the governance processes of a non-profit organization, as well as the personal qualities to be able to make a substantial active contribution to Board deliberations, including intelligence and wisdom, self-assuredness, interpersonal and communication skills, courage and inquisitiveness.

Further, each candidate must be willing to commit, as well as have, sufficient time available to discharge the duties of Board membership and should have sufficient years available for service to make a significant contribution to JA over time.

Whenever a vacancy occurs on the Board of Directors, the Board Development Committee is responsible for identifying one or more candidates to fill that vacancy, investigating each candidate, evaluating his or her suitability for service on the Board and recommending a candidate to the full Board. In addition, the committee is responsible for recommending nominees for election or reelection to the Board at each annual meeting of the Board.
