JA Dollars with Sense
Financial Literacy starts here…
This is an interactive program designed to encourage grade 8 students to develop the financial literacy necessary to make informed decisions about their financial futures. Students learn about budgeting, money management and investments. Dollars with Sense is made available to students through the cooperative efforts of businesses and schools. The program is delivered through four lessons and with the help of Servus volunteers, students learn the importance of investing in themselves.
Lesson 1: Let’s talk money! The students will learn about their financial money “profile” through a self quiz. They will learn about money as a means of exchange for goods and services. They will also learn about how to conduct transactions using a variety of different methods of payment and investigate the most appropriate methods of payment in different situations
Lesson 2: Be a smart shopper! The students will learn that making good financial decisions about how they spend their money is an important part of money management. They will examine their spending habits and reflect on the factors that influence their spending. They will look at ways of becoming a SMART consumer.
Lesson 3: Look after your money! Students will have an opportunity to reflect on their Needs, Wants, and Goals and to develop an understanding of the importance of budgeting as a means of looking after their money and helping them meet their goals.
Lesson 4: Make your money work! The students learn about a variety of investments, including savings accounts, Canada Savings Bonds, GIC’s, Mutual funds, and stocks. They will also learn the advantages and disadvantages of various investments.
