Want to learn what it takes to run your own business? The JA Company Program gives you practical experience in setting up and managing your own company in an after school setting. Under the guidance of volunteers from the business community, you and students from other schools form a company, elect an executive team, develop a product and take that product to market. The Company Program is an after-school program, designed for high school students, that provides an opportunity for young people to better understand how businesses are developed, organized, managed and operated. By starting and operating an actual business enterprise, students not only learn how businesses function, they also learn about the structure of the Canadian economic system and the benefits it provides.
Students from Edmonton and the surrounding area are formed into companies of 15-20 students. Each company is sponsored by a local corporation, which provides volunteer business advisors to support and guide the students. During the course of their Company's operation, students will have the opportunity to:
incorporate and capitalize their company by selling shares organize a board of directors and elect or appoint officers produce and market a product or service establish production and sales goals for their company monitor progress toward their goals at regular company meetings maintain and analyze financial records compile an annual report for shareholders, pay a dividend, and liquidate the company While working as a member of their company, students will gain many valuable experiences and skills that will help them to succeed in future endeavors. Students will develop critical thinking, speaking and leadership skills, while increasing their understanding for teamwork and responsibility. These are basic workforce-readiness skills that employers desire in their employees.
Each student run company operates one night a week for 17 weeks, from the beginning of February until the beginning of June. The program hosts companies on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the JA Centre, #200 World Trade Center Edmonton, located at 9990 Jasper Avenue.
The Canadian National Junior Achievement Conference (jaXchange):
The Canadian National Junior Achievement Conference is an internationally renowned conference within the JA organization. "jaX" is held every August in a selected city where Junior Achievement operates. Close to 200 achievers from across Canada and around the World come together to learn about the different business influences: Marketing, Human Resources and Process & Production. Arranged into 6 colour houses, 30 achievers will work throughout the week to answer the jaX “Question”, visit the house sponsor on a site-tour, create a skit, a house cheer, a house newspaper and their sponsor's thank you gift.
Each year, Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta & NWT sends 4 deserving achievers to attend this conference, all expenses paid. The winners are selected by participating in a jaX interview and are announced at the Company Program's Awards.
